Reduce Williamsburg Bridge Subway Noise for South Williamsburg & Domino Park

Reduce Williamsburg Bridge Subway Noise for South Williamsburg & Domino Park

The Issue

Excessive subway noise from trains crossing the Williamsburg Bridge is adversely affecting residents, families, workers, and visitors around Domino Square and the South Williamsburg waterfront.

The J/M/Z trains pass over the bridge frequently, including early mornings, late nights, and peak commuting hours. For people living near the bridge, using Domino Square Park, walking dogs, working from home, visiting local businesses, or spending time with children outdoors, the repeated screeching and rumbling is disruptive and, at times, overwhelming.

This is not just an annoyance. Persistent urban noise pollution is linked to sleep disruption, stress, reduced concentration, and long-term health impacts. Children, elderly residents, people working from home, and residents whose apartments face the bridge are especially affected. The noise also diminishes the quality of public spaces like Domino Square Park, which should be a place for families and the neighborhood to gather comfortably.

We are asking the MTA, NYC Department of Transportation, local elected officials, and relevant city agencies to treat this as a serious quality-of-life and public health issue, and to work together on practical noise-reduction measures.

Requested actions include:

  • Regular track inspection and maintenance on the Williamsburg Bridge
  • Rail grinding or welding where appropriate to reduce screeching and vibration
  • Improved lubrication systems on curves and high-friction areas
  • Noise and vibration studies near Domino Square and the South Williamsburg waterfront
  • Installation of sound-dampening materials where feasible
  • Evaluation of modern noise-reduction technologies used on other elevated rail systems
  • A public timeline for investigation, mitigation, and follow-up

Brooklyn’s waterfront has grown into a dense residential and public community. The infrastructure serving it needs to be maintained in a way that protects residents’ health and allows people to use parks, homes, schools, libraries, and local businesses without constant excessive train noise.

By signing this petition, you are asking the MTA and city officials to take urgent, practical action to reduce subway noise from the Williamsburg Bridge and improve quality of life for the Domino Square and South Williamsburg community.
