Reduce vehicle speed on Lord Street, Gladstone
The issue
Every day, as I witness the hurried rush of vehicles zooming past on Lord Street, between Goondoon Street and Hanson Road, my concern grows not just for the wellbeing of our community, but also for my own family and friends. The deafening roar of speeding motorbikes and cars has become a persistent disturbance, reverberating through our homes and disrupting the serene environment of our neighbourhood.
However, it’s more than just an issue of noise pollution. The speed at which these vehicles are travelling poses a serious risk to the safety of pedestrians and motorists. For those attempting to enter Lord Street from Central Lane and Glenlyon Street, every crossing feels fraught with danger. The chance of an accident is high, and it is only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs if immediate action is not taken.
Statistics from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads highlight that reducing vehicle speeds can significantly decrease both the occurrence and severity of crashes. Even a reduction of 5 km/h in vehicle speed can lower crash risk by about 10%. This evidence underscores the critical need for speed control measures to be implemented on our streets to protect our community members.
We are proposing the installation of traffic calming devices such as speed bumps, clearer signage indicating the speed limits, and the deployment of speed monitoring equipment. These solutions are not just feasible but already proven effective in similar situations across our country.
Let’s secure a safer environment for all residents and visitors of Gladstone. Join us in urging local authorities to take decisive action. By signing this petition, you can help make our streets safer and our community stronger. Every signature counts. Please sign and share this petition to ensure our voices are heard.
