The Issue

As a Vehicle Recovery Operator, I've witnessed firsthand the tragic aftermath of road accidents. Many of these life-threatening situations arise from poor driving standards, including issues like middle lane hogging on motorways and dangerous entries onto slip roads. It's clear that more needs to be done to ensure the safety of everyone on Britain's roads.

Currently, foreign drivers can drive in the UK on their existing licences for up to 12 months without taking a UK driving test. This leniency, although convenient, can sometimes lead to severe road mishaps due to differences in driving standards and rules between countries. To bridge this gap, it's crucial that we reassess this period and ensure that all drivers on UK roads are equipped with the local knowledge and skills necessary to drive safely.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that road traffic accidents have been rising, and in 2022 alone, there were over 26,000 serious injuries from road traffic collisions. A significant portion of these incidents involves drivers who might not be fully acquainted with the UK's driving regulations and traffic conditions.

Our proposal is to reduce the currently permitted duration to drive on a foreign licence from 12 months to 3 months. This will encourage foreign drivers to familiarize themselves with UK roads and regulations sooner or incentivize them to take a UK driving test. If a driving test is taken and failed within these 3 months, the said driver will no longer be able to continue driving until a test is passed by the DVLA.  This change will align with safety protocols and reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by unfamiliarity with local driving conditions.

Let's take a step towards safer roads by supporting this change. By signing this petition, you will be advocating for a safer driving environment in the UK, and potentially saving countless lives. Let us make our roads safer and more secure for everyone who uses them. Please sign and share this petition today.
