The Issue

As residents of our shared community, we've witnessed the dangers of the current 35 mph limit on Union Street S. We've seen cars colliding with fences, poles, and other vehicles. Some of us have also narrowly escaped accidents while crossing the street on foot, due to a lack of crosswalks and the speed of traffic. This speeding problem is exacerbated by the proximity of vehicles to sidewalks, with only planting strips as a barrier. This situation puts our loved ones and friends at significant risk.

Union Street S isn't equipped to handle speeds of 35 mph safely. Considering pedestrian safety, many cities enforce a speed limit of 25 mph in residential areas, proven to significantly reduce fatal accidents (Road Safety Observatory, 2015). Adopting a similar policy on Union Street S will keep locals safer and prevent unnecessary accidents.

By signing this petition, you support the reduction of the speed limit, which will create a safer environment for all residents, especially those walking or cycling. Traffic safety is a right, not a privilege. Please sign the petition to urge our local officials to lower the speed limit on Union Street S.
