Reduce the speed limit in Rowsham to 30mph
The Issue
Rowsham should be a peaceful village, but the reality is very different. The 40mph speed limit through the village results in excessive traffic noise, increased air pollution, and serious safety concerns for residents.
The road is used by pedestrians, including those accessing the bus stop, yet crossing it is often difficult and intimidating because of the speed and volume of traffic. The current speed limit makes the road feel unsafe for everyone who lives here.
Although the speed limit was reduced from 60mph to 40mph in 2009, there have been 9 injury collisions and 11 casualties on just a 0.2-mile stretch of the A418 through Rowsham. The road remains particularly dangerous because of the sharp bend, multiple junctions, limited visibility, and vehicles travelling at speed.
We are especially concerned about children who have to use bus services to travel to school. They are often required to cross, or wait beside, the A418 during busy commuter periods when traffic is at its heaviest.
Residents, businesses, and visitors regularly have to turn onto or off the A418 from Manor Road, Bennetts Lane, Brewhouse Lane, and nearby driveways. These turning movements create conflict points that make the current 40mph limit inappropriate for the road layout and level of activity.
Many neighbouring villages and hamlets have already benefited from 30mph or even 20mph limits. There is no reason why Rowsham should be treated differently. Reducing the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph would help slow traffic, improve safety, reduce the risk of accidents, and significantly lessen the noise and air pollution that affect daily life.
Evidence shows that lower speed limits reduce both the number and severity of road traffic accidents, making communities safer and more pleasant places to live.
We urge Buckinghamshire Council to review the current speed limit in Rowsham and reduce it to 30mph. This is a practical, achievable measure that would make a real difference to the safety, health, and quality of life of everyone in our community.
