Help make our Glen Ellyn neighborhoods safer by reducing the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. All of our Glen Ellyn drivers and pedestrians, especially our children, will benefit from a lower speed limit and improved driver awareness. 

Our walkable neighborhoods are a big part of what makes Glen Ellyn special. A group of local parents have become increasingly concerned over the lack of safe driving we've seen all over town. We've found many other residents share our concerns, and the final straw moving us toward action was an accident involving a neighborhood child (who miraculously is ok). 

Originally this petition included that personal experience however the emotional toll and the involvement of a child has caused me to remove the specifics. Regardless, I think we can all agree that we do not want to see any of our families experience a traffic accident involving a pedestrian. 

Studies across the country (and next door in Wheaton) show that even reducing the speed limit by 5 mph makes a significant difference in increasing driver awareness, reducing accidents, lessening through traffic, and leads to overall safer streets and neighborhoods. 

New York City's reduction of the default speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph aimed to enhance pedestrian safety. Studies suggest that a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph has a 25% risk of serious or fatal injury, while this risk jumps to 50% at 33 mph and 75% at 41 mph.

In Boston, after lowering the default speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph, the likelihood of vehicles exceeding 25 mph, 30 mph, and 35 mph decreased by 2.9%, 8.5%, and 29.3%, respectively.

We've all seen drivers rolling stop signs and speeding down our residential streets where we walk, bike, and play. It's time for a safer Glen Ellyn.

In addition to signing this petition, please do your part to be more aware while driving through our residential streets. Stay off your phone, slow down, stop fully at stop signs, wait for pedestrians, and pass the message along to your friends (and teenagers!).
