Reduce the cost of domestic flights in Canada
The Issue
To the House of Commons in Parliament Assembled:
We, the undersigned, draw the attention of the House to the following:
- That Canadians pay among the highest domestic airfares in the developed world, with comparable domestic flights often costing 30–100% more than similar routes in the United States, and in some cases two to four times more than comparable flights in Europe.
That Canada's geography makes air travel an essential service for many Canadians, particularly those living in northern, remote, rural, and island communities. - That the high cost of domestic air travel is driven not only by limited airline competition, but also by federal airport rents, airport improvement fees, security charges, navigation fees, and other taxes and government-imposed costs that are passed on to passengers.
- That these costs discourage Canadians from travelling within their own country, reducing opportunities to support Canadian businesses, tourism operators, and local economies.
- That making domestic air travel more affordable would strengthen Canada's tourism industry, improve regional connectivity, and encourage Canadians to keep more of their travel spending within Canada.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, petition the Government of Canada to:
- Conduct a comprehensive review of all federal taxes, fees, airport rents, and regulatory costs that contribute to the price of domestic airfare.
- Develop a plan to reduce unnecessary government-imposed costs on domestic airline tickets while maintaining Canada's high standards for aviation safety and security.
- Introduce policies that encourage greater competition within Canada's domestic airline market and reduce barriers for new and existing carriers.
- Work with airports, airlines, provinces, territories, and industry stakeholders to improve the affordability and accessibility of domestic air travel for all Canadians.
- Report publicly on the findings of this review and provide a timeline for implementing measures that will lower the cost of domestic air travel.
By making domestic air travel more affordable, Canada has an opportunity to strengthen its economy, support local businesses, improve access to communities across the country, and make it easier for Canadians to explore and invest in their own nation.
