The Issue

Christy Park, located in McKeesport, PA, was a distinct borough created in 1893 before joining McKeesport in 1898. Historically, it was defined by the U.S. Steel Christy Park Works, a major industrial facility that produced bomb casings during WWII and pioneering compressed gas cylinders. Today, it is known as a quiet residential neighborhood.

The charming community of Christy Park has long been a safe and peaceful haven for its residents. Christy Park is a huge part of Mckeesport history, but some how seems to always get over looked!! It is seen daily by hundreds maybe even thousands of vehicles driving through it!

The increasing incidents of speeding through our streets have become a pressing concern that threatens the safety and tranquility of our neighborhood. We are reaching out to demand immediate action to rectify this situation after a  serious accident occurred on 28th Street resulting in the senseless loss of life on a street that no one should be traveling well over 50 miles per hour.

Statistics from various traffic studies show that speeding is one of the leading causes of accidents in residential areas. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding contributes to approximately 26% of all traffic fatalities across the United States. In our community, we have observed a noticeable increase in fast-moving vehicles, especially during rush hours and late at night, putting pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers at risk. And since Christy Park is a community that is surrounded by hills and only has several ways to get through it like Walnut Street or Eden Park Blvd  being very well traveled  roads. People think if they speed through the allies they can beat traffic.  When all that does is create a dangerous situation for pedestrians , children, pets and vehicles that live within Christy Park.
The situation is not only alarming but entirely preventable. We propose the implementation of effective measures such as additional speed limit signs and stop signs, the deployment of speed bumps in strategic locations, and increased patrolling by local law enforcement. These strategies have proven successful in similar communities in reducing vehicle speeds and enhancing public safety.

The safety of our children, elderly, and all residents should never be compromised. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to make Christy Park a safe and secure place to live. By addressing the speeding issue head-on, we not only protect our community but also enhance the quality of life for everyone who calls Christy Park home.

Join us in this crucial effort to safeguard our streets. Sign this petition urging city officials and law enforcement to prioritize the safety of Christy Park by implementing the necessary traffic calming measures. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that our community remains a peaceful and secure haven for all its residents.
