The issue

Every time I walk through my local park or along the beaches of our coastline, I can't help but notice the devastation caused by single-use plastics. It's not just an unsightly mess, it's a deadly threat to our wildlife. I've witnessed the sight of sea turtles smothered by plastic bags or birds struggling with plastic rings caught around their beaks. These innocent creatures' lives are cut short by materials that are used once and discarded without a second thought.

We are at a low when it comes to plastic pollution. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, over 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year, with at least 8 million tonnes ending up in our oceans annually. This affects not only marine life but also affects the health of entire ecosystems and, ultimately, our own well-being as humans. Single-use plastics, such as bags, straws, and cutlery, compose a significant part of this and need immediate phasing out.

To address this growing crisis, we need clear, actionable, and immediate steps. I encourage people to help in reducing the production and sale of single-use plastics. Countries like the UK and Canada have taken such steps, proving that change is possible and that these materials can be replaced with sustainable alternatives.

Businesses should also be encouraged and supported to transition to eco-friendly materials through tax incentives and subsidies. Together, we can shift towards an economy that uses reuse, recycling, and the reduction of waste.

This fight against single-use plastics is not just for the animals or the landscapes we love, but for the health of our planet and future generations. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for animals struggling against plastic waste, and advocating for a healthier environment for all. Join us in this critical movement to eliminate these hazards and hold both our governments and industries accountable for sustainable practices.

We all have a role to play when it comes to removing plastic from the ocean and protecting our environment. Future generations won't have the fun we do if this doesn't stop.

Please sign this petition to urge legislative bodies and businesses to reduce all single-use plastics and invest in sustainable alternatives. Let's protect our wildlife and preserve our planet for the future.
