The Issue

We, the residents of Lowgate are petitioning to ask Northumberland  county council for a reduced speed limit on the B6305 at Lowgate.

Lowgate bus stop is regularly used by school children and elderly care home residents from the nearby Lowgate care home. Due to the blind corner and high speed traffic, visibility is extremely limited. In addition horses and riders must cross the road at this location to access the nearby bridle way. With no safe crossing this creates a significant risk of serious injury or fatal accidents

Children, elderly residents, and horse riders are particularly vulnerable. The current road speed limit of 60mph is extremely dangerous. Lowering the speed limit in this area would be a reasonable and responsible measure to protect the community and prevent a potential tragic accident before it occurs.

The presence of a junction further increases the danger, as vehicles are required to turn in and out of the road while traffic is travelling at high speed. Due to the combination of a blind corner, junction, fast-moving traffic, and bus stop this stretch of road is extremely dangerous for pedestrians, riders, and drivers.

We therefore urge for an assessment and a reduction in road speed as a matter of priority. Along with any other safety measures deemed necessary.
