The Issue

After a huge rise in accommodation cost at Brook Hall (University of Manchester student halls) run by Unite Students, us residents are struggling to cover our rent payment instalments. It is greedy of Unite Students to unnecessarily force newly-independent teenagers to pay higher rent prices among a cost of living crisis, when Unite Students make £339.7 million in rental income, but it only costs them £98.7 million in operating expenses. They are making a 344% on what it costs them on rent, yet still charge us ridiculously increasing prices in rent. (2022 data, yet they claimed here that they were going to increase rental incomes)

Our main concern is the unnecessary raise in price (of an extra £25 a week in only 1 year), leading us to have to fork an extra £2,000 out of our own pockets that many people's families cannot accommodate for, nor can our student loan that, for all, fails to cover the rent, and for some, fails to cover even half of it. (2022 - £160/w, 2023 - £180/w, 2024 - £205/w)

When we compare the standards of our hall (no public facilities; no social areas; small rooms with constant maintenance issues; overpriced laundry facilities; multiple recorded break-ins; among other concerns) to the 'luxury' UoM halls such as Unsworth Park (which pays an almost identical price to us), it highlights the unfairness of the price we have to pay.

It is clear from the financial figures that Unite Students has no justifiable reason to charge us this extra money a week, due to their profit margins being extortionately high.

For this, UNITE STUDENTS - we ask you to consider the unfair pricing of this hall and make a change. Not just for us, but for the future students that will have to face this issue too.
