Reduce Plastic Pollution in Adelaide's Oceans and Waterways

Reduce Plastic Pollution in Adelaide's Oceans and Waterways
The issue
Plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways is a serious threat to marine life, human health, and the delicate ecosystems within our oceans and waterways. In South Australia, this issue has escalated to alarming levels, impacting not only our stunning coastlines but also the biodiversity that thrives within these waters. It can take just a moment for plastic to enter the environment and oceans, but the environmental impacts last for centuries.
Over 100 million marine animals are killed each year due to plastic waste when they ingest or become entangled in it, according to UNESCO. Around 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. The way we're going by 2050 predictions suggest that the weight of plastic in the ocean will be more than the weight of fish and that 99% of seabirds will have ingested some kind of plastic pollution.
It is crucial that we act now to save our oceans and waterways. Implementing local policies such as reducing single-use plastics and increasing recycling efforts is crucial if we want to help preserve our oceans for future generations.
We call upon the South Australian government and local councils to take decisive actions towards regulations on things like plastic production and waste management in our area as well as supporting and using biodegradable materials, and enhancing public awareness on this issue.
Join us in safeguarding Adelaide’s oceans and waterways. Sign this petition to push for cleaner oceans and turn the tide against plastic pollution.
