Reduce PE requirement at Frisco ISD high schools to one semester

Reduce PE requirement at Frisco ISD high schools to one semester
The Issue
My high school experience within the Frisco Independent School District has been heavily influenced by the rigid graduation requirements, particularly concerning Physical Education (PE). The current mandate requiring two semesters of PE is impacting students like me who are actively involved in co-curricular activities that contribute equally to our physical development and well-being. For instance, being part of the school band and recently completing the marching season, I have only fulfilled half of the existing PE requirement. Opting for another year of band will consume two of my electives next year, thereby significantly altering my planned academic trajectory and career ambitions.
The two-semester requirement for PE as it stands places undue constraints on students. It limits our ability to pursue courses directly aligned with our future aspirations—courses that could better prepare us for our intended fields, whether they be STEM subjects, arts, or vocational tracks. Moreover, numerous co-curricular activities, including band, dance, sports teams, and even certain academic clubs, provide the physical activity and teamwork experience that PE aims to offer, just in different forms.
Research has shown that exposure to a variety of educational experiences contributes significantly to a student's overall development and future success. According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics, students who participated in extracurricular activities reported higher levels of academic achievement and personal growth than those who did not. This suggests that allowing more flexibility in fulfilling graduation requirements could lead to improved student outcomes.
The current requirement does not only affect individual students' academic paths but also burdens families who seek to provide the best support for their children's ambitions. In many cases, parents find themselves having to adjust their schedules and resources to accommodate the extra demand that the two-semester PE requirement imposes.
I am asking the Frisco Independent School District Board to re-evaluate and amend the existing PE graduation requirement from two semesters to just one. This adjustment would bring much-needed flexibility to our academic plans, allowing us the opportunity to explore and excel in subjects that directly cater to our future goals without compromising our holistic high or physical activity levels.
Please support this petition to encourage the Frisco ISD to adjust the PE requirement and better align it with the diverse needs and talents of their student body. Sign this petition if you believe in fostering a more adaptable and supportive educational environment in Frisco ISD.
