The Issue

As students enrolled in the BSS vocal music courses, especially AMV4M and AMC4MV, we chose these courses because of our passion for music and our commitment to developing both our practical and theoretical skills. We understand that music theory is an important part of our education, but we feel that the current Breezin’ Thru Theory workload is becoming difficult to manage.

Our main concern is not simply the amount of homework, but the amount of repetition. Much of the work we are currently completing covers the same concepts and exercises that many of us already completed in previous music courses, including last year. While we understand that some review is necessary, repeatedly completing the same types of assignments does not always help us build new skills or knowledge.

Between classes, practicing, rehearsals, performances, other assignments, and personal responsibilities, completing large amounts of repetitive theory homework can be overwhelming and take time away from other important aspects of our music education.

We are not asking for music theory to be removed or for important concepts to be skipped. Instead, we are asking for the Breezin’ Thru Theory workload to be reconsidered, especially when assignments repeat material we have already learned. We believe the focus should be on new concepts, meaningful applications, and areas where we actually need additional practice.

We are asking Mrs. Mehta to reduce unnecessary repetition in the Breezin’ Thru Theory homework assigned to AMV4M and AMC4MV students. This would allow us to spend less time repeating material we already understand and more time developing as musicians.

Please sign this petition to support a more focused and reasonable approach to music theory homework. Together, we can help create a learning environment that challenges us while continuing to support our passion for music.
