Reduce insurance and fuel costs for young drivers in the UK
The Issue
I am reaching out to address an urgent issue affecting not just myself, but countless young drivers across the UK: the exorbitant cost of car insurance and petrol. As a young driver, I find it increasingly difficult to afford the necessary costs associated with driving a vehicle, which limits opportunities for independence and mobility. The financial burden of maintaining a car is asphyxiating, and many of us are left wondering if it's even possible to enjoy the freedom and convenience that driving should naturally offer.
The high cost of insurance premiums for young drivers is particularly concerning. Statistics from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) indicate that young drivers aged 17-24 pay, on average, £1,876 annually on car insurance—often more than the value of the car they are driving. This financial strain is a result of risk-assessment models that unfairly penalize younger drivers solely based on age, without accounting for responsible driving behavior or clean driving records. It's time to revise these models and bring fairness to insurance pricing.
Additionally, the rising fuel prices are another critical barrier for young drivers. As of 2023, the average price of petrol in the UK has surged to over £1.45 per litre, according to the UK Government's road fuel prices monitoring, leaving many drivers, young and old, struggling to bear the costs. This trend creates an unsustainable situation whereby the ability to drive is reserved for the affluent, marginalizing those who rely on transportation for livelihoods, education, and everyday convenience.
Our goal is to urge the UK government and insurance companies to reconsider the current pricing models for young drivers. Specifically, we propose the creation of tailored insurance policies that fairly assess risk based on actual driving history, not just age. This could include enhanced telematics-based policies that offer discounts to young drivers who demonstrate safe driving through monitored data. Regarding fuel prices, we appeal for government intervention to stabilize and ideally reduce costs, which could be achieved by temporary reductions in fuel duty or fostering initiatives that support fuel efficiency improvements.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a movement towards more equitable and accessible driving for all young people in the UK. Together, let's call for a fair system that empowers young drivers without making car ownership an unattainable luxury.
