Reduce Food Waste Globally through Awareness, Education, and Community Engagement

Reduce Food Waste Globally through Awareness, Education, and Community Engagement

The Issue

Growing up, my mother would always talk about kids who doesn't have enough food to survive when I couldn't finish my food. So I grew up really mindful of my food waste, I always try to make or get food that I know I could finish. Because I became conscious of my food intakes I would notice a lot of actions from other people, like throwing away half eaten food because they're full, or when supermarkets throw expired food in the trash because not a lot of people buy them, or even when people cuts most of the "meat" of fruits or vegetables just by peeling the skin.

Food Waste is food that is intended for human consumption that is wasted and lost, and can occur anywhere throughout the entire supply chain from farm stage to harvest to households. (Lai, 2023)

Food Waste also causes a negative impact in the environment. When disposed in landfills produced harmful greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide, contributing to climate change and global warming, I am sure we are all familiar with the effects of climate change and global warming. Natural resources such as land, freshwater, and human resources are also wasted.

Reducing Food Waste has numerous benefits. Here are a few based on my observation and research

  1. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction- Decomposing food in landfills produces methane so by reducing food waste, it can significantly lower these emissions
  2. Water Conservation- Less food waste means using less water for agricultural processes
  3. Reduced Energy of Production- Less food waste means fewer resources are needed for farming, processing, transporting, and storing of food
  4. Promoting Sustainable Eating- Reducing waste encourages individuals to be more mindful about consumption and food management, potentially leading to healthier eating habits.

I wanted to address this globally rather than local and nationally because comparing to what I am seeing in my community and around my country I am sure that a lot of people contributes of food waste around the world as well. In Summary, while reducing food waste offers numerous environmental, economic, and social benefits, it also presents challenges. Addressing these challenges requires an approach involving community engagement, supportive policies, and innovative solutions. Together we can make a significant impact and create a more sustainable future.
