Reduce Food Waste by Supporting the Food Date Labeling Act

The Issue

Have you ever questioned whether or not to eat food past its “expiration date”? Or even tossed perfectly looking food because of a confusing date label? You’re not alone!

Did you know that in the U.S. today, there are over 50 different types of date labels (Think: “Best by,” “Best before,” “Use by,” “Sell by,” “Packed on,” etc.) being used on food products? That’s because there is no federal regulation of the types of labels that can be used or what they can be used for. So much so that ambiguous date labeling practices lead to over 80% of Americans discarding perfectly good food simply because it's past its labeled expiration date.

This contributes to the nearly 1/3 of our nation’s food supply that is wasted each year, which equates to a staggering $310 billion worth of food.

The Food Date Labeling Act proposes a straightforward solution. If a company decides to use date labels, it would mandate that they use one of the two following ones:

  • "BEST If Used By" to indicate optimal freshness and quality
  • “USE By” to indicate the discard date

These clear labels ensure consumers understand the quality and safety implications of packaged food.

By clarifying when food may have diminished slightly in quality, but is still entirely edible, the Act will also allow for more food to be donated to those in need. In fact, the Act actually encourages food manufacturers to donate surplus food past its quality date, provided it meets safety standards—helping to alleviate food insecurity and reduce food waste.

Finally, the Act mandates the USDA and FDA to educate consumers and producers alike about these standardized labels, empowering individuals to make informed choices and reduce unnecessary food waste.

Here’s where you come in: We’re calling on Congress to pass the Food Date Labeling Act—and we need your help. Together, we can:

  • Reduce food waste and save households money
  • Support food donation efforts to combat hunger
  • Promote a more sustainable food system for future generations

Sign this petition today to make a difference! Together, let's ensure that food date labeling makes sense and helps feed America while reducing waste.
