We, the students of Gauhati University and affiliated colleges, respectfully urge the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and Government of Assam to immediately reduce the exorbitant fees of the Five-Year Integrated Master's Programme (FYIMP) and introduce meaningful fee waivers for economically needy and meritorious students.

Background & Timeline:

• The FYIMP was introduced in August 2023.
• Since the very beginning, students have repeatedly requested the authorities to reduce fees and provide waivers, citing financial hardship.
• In March 2026, students were forced to protest, including a hunger strike, against the high fee structure.
• The university gave assurances and promised a stakeholder meeting on 10th May 2026 to discuss fee reduction.
• However, on 12th May 2026, the university issued a re-admission notification with the same high fees (no reduction):
  • Arts/Humanities: ₹12,500(even), ₹14,500(odd) per semester
  • Science: ₹14,500(even), ₹16,500(odd) per semester 
  • Commerce: ₹23,000 – ₹25,000 per semester
  • MBA: ₹30,000 per semester
• Deadline for payment is 29th May 2026.

Other genuine concerns:

• Students in affiliated colleges are also affected, the form fill-up fee has been increased from ₹890 to ₹980 without any improvement in facilities.
• Despite paying such high amounts, students are not getting basic facilities like official educational email IDs, proper infrastructure, or other promised benefits.
• Many other universities and colleges in Assam and India successfully provide fee waivers and reductions for EWS, SC/ST, OBC, and meritorious students. If they can do it, why can't Gauhati University?

Our demands:

1. Substantial reduction in FYIMP fees to make them affordable.
2. Transparent and generous fee waiver policy for economically weaker students.
3. Proper consultation with students before any future fee hikes.
4. Provision of basic facilities (educational email, better infrastructure, etc.).

Education is a right, not a luxury. Many bright students from rural and low-income families in Assam are at risk of dropping out. We request the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Education Minister, and Gauhati University authorities to intervene urgently before the 29th May deadline.
