Reduce excessive homework burdens on secondary students
The Issue
I'm a student from a secondary school facing an overwhelming amount of homework assignments, and I'm finding it increasingly difficult to manage. Recently, I received nine separate assignments within just three days. This is not only stressful but also unfair, as it invades personal time and negatively impacts the pursuit of other important aspects of life.
The pressure to complete tasks from platforms like Sparx Maths and Sparx Reader, along with writing long essays, eats up my free time. The expectation is that we should juggle these alongside our regular six-hour school day. Being unable to keep up can damage not only my academic prospects, like passing my GCSEs, but also my mental health.
Research supports that excessive homework doesn't necessarily enhance academic performance. In fact, it shows that too much homework can lead to stress, lack of motivation, and a decrease in the quality of learning. According to a study by Stanford University, too much homework leads to stress and health problems among students, which is counterproductive to the aim of education.
The expectation for students to complete several hours of homework every night is unrealistic and unsustainable. I believe that homework should be meaningful, purposeful, and tailored to reinforce learning, not to overwhelm students with the threat of academic failure.
I urge educational authorities to reconsider current homework policies and encourage teachers to assign manageable amounts of homework that take into account students' overall workloads. This change could greatly enhance the well-being and academic success of students.
Please join me in asking for a fair balance between school work and personal time. By signing this petition, we can advocate for a more reasonable approach to homework that prioritizes the holistic well-being and development of students.
