Reduce Cervical Screening Interval to 2 Years

The Issue

Having survived cervical cancer, I know firsthand the crucial role cervical screenings play in saving lives. I am deeply concerned with the recent NHS decision to extend the interval between cervical screenings from 3 to 5 years. This change is not just a procedural adjustment; it is a potentially life-threatening step back for women's health. Women’s health should never be deprioritized, especially when the cost is measured in lives lost.

This change comes despite the grim statistic that over 850 women lose their lives to cervical cancer each year in the UK. Increasing the screening interval could result in delayed detection, giving this aggressive disease more time to progress unchecked. Early detection is paramount in fighting cervical cancer, and regular screenings are our most effective tool to achieve that. Every additional year between screenings increases the risk of this cancer developing unnoticed.

While budgetary concerns are real, the consequences of reducing screening frequency cannot be justified when the primary aim of the healthcare system is to save lives. According to Cancer Research UK, cervical screening saves an estimated 5,000 lives each year. Potential savings in NHS funds should not take precedence over the invaluable outcome of preserving life and health. The aim should always be to improve methods, accuracy, and accessibility in health services, not reduce their frequency.

Reverting to a 2-year interval for cervical screening is a proactive, preventive measure that acknowledges the urgency and severity of cervical cancer. Countries like the United States follow a biennial screening model and have found success in early detection and treatment. This should serve as a model for the UK in safeguarding women’s health.

Please support this petition to urge NHS to prioritize women’s health by reducing the cervical screening interval back to every 2 years. Let us not compromise on the quality and frequency of healthcare for budgetary reasons, but instead ensure comprehensive and frequent screenings to protect women across the nation and ultimately save lives.

Sign this petition to demand a necessary change in our healthcare system. Together, we can make a difference in women’s health and fight cervical cancer more effectively.
