The Issue

Outwood has been noticeably affected by an increase in aircraft noise over the village. We want action taken by the airports responsible (Gatwick and Heathrow), NATS (Air Traffic Control) and their governing body the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA ), to address the following issues:

  • Volume of aircraft flying directly over the village: notwithstanding the Noise Preference Route is positioned well to the north of the village, air traffic control are now vectoring both Gatwick and Heathrow planes directly over the houses in the village. Heathrow planes have increased overflight at certain times by as much as 50%
  • Noise levels: increased noise levels from vectoring of Gatwick and larger Heathrow aircraft over the village
  • Early morning flights: Use of night flight quotas to justify Gatwick morning operations beginning as a matter of course at 5.30am in the morning before the 6am watershed
  • Middle of the night flights: increasing flights coming in batches during the night so that people are more likely to be woken. There should be no flights between 11.30pm- 6am.

Appointment of an aircraft noise ombudsman: we need someone independent to look at noise complaints so that the airports, NATS and the CAA can take responsibility for the noise increase

They need to consider how Outwood gets respite – no community should be impacted by multiple airports and flight routes.
