The issue

The Eastern Busway extension to Capalaba is a proposed traditional busway project into a proposed Brisbane Metro expansion (Line M3) aimed for delivery ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This was proposed by the former State Miles Labor Government and with support from the Redlands Mayor Jos Mitchell prior to the 2024 QLD State Election. There was originally a plan to build the busway to Capalaba but it was shelved after the 2011 QLD Floods.

Project Status and Planning (2026):

Transition to Brisbane Metro: The original "Eastern Busway" project, which stalled in 2011, has been revived as an extension of the fully-electric Brisbane Metro network. This route is referred to as Metro Line 3 (M3).

Current Progress: As of late 2025, the project is in the business case investigation phase. While initial planning and feasibility studies were funded jointly by the state and local governments, major construction has not yet commenced.

Interim Solutions: The Eastern Transitway (Stage 1), which includes bus priority works on Old Cleveland Road between Coorparoo and Carindale, is already operational as a cost-effective precursor to the full busway/metro extension.

Proposed Route and Stations
The extension is planned to run approximately 17.7km from the existing Eastern Busway (Buranda/Coorparoo) to Capalaba, primarily along the Old Cleveland Road corridor. Key suburbs on the proposed route include:

  • Coorparoo
  • Camp Hill
  • Carina
  • Carindale
  • Chandler
  • Capalaba (Terminal station)

Key Objectives:

2032 Olympic Games: The extension is considered critical to servicing seven Olympic venues located in the eastern suburbs, including the Birkdale Whitewater Centre. Congestion Relief: The project aims to reduce heavy traffic on Old Cleveland Road, where bus commuters currently face significant peak-hour delays.

Service Frequency: Once operational, Metro services are intended to run as often as every 5 minutes according to the spin regardless this petition calls on more efficient public transport with an Eastern bus corridor to Capalaba from Brisbane. As its a bipartisan issue and should be treated as such but with expert analysis from the public transport sector, upon feedback and input from the general public.

This project would be greatly beneficial for commuters and local residents of the South - East region in South East Brisbane Bayside, Redlands, and Logan residents even after the Olympics as the City further develops with a great population and higher projected tourism numbers.

If this project isn't produced by the year 2032 it could create significant congestion traffic issues for an otherwise expanding populated area, particularly as the Olympics are projected to take place in the local area.
