The Issue

This is to request support for the proposed redevelopment of our local skatepark, which has unfortunately fallen into a serious state of disrepair.

The skatepark has long been an important space for young people in our community, providing a safe and active environment where they can socialise, develop skills, and stay engaged in healthy pastimes. However, due to years of wear and lack of maintenance, many of the ramps and surfaces are now damaged or unsafe, which discourages use and increases the risk of injury.

At a time when young people urgently need more positive activities and spaces to gather, investing in this redevelopment would have significant benefits. A modern, well-maintained, concrete skatepark would:

Encourage physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour.

Provide a constructive outlet that can help deter anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

Foster a stronger sense of community among young residents.

Create an inclusive space accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities.

I would also like to highlight that the original skatepark was only possible thanks to the dedication and hard work of a remarkable local resident, Sue Chick, who committed her time and energy many years ago to making the project a reality. Sadly, she is no longer with us. As a community, we feel it would be a fitting tribute to her memory to ensure the skatepark is not only preserved, but redeveloped into a space that honours her vision and continues to benefit future generations.

We believe our community deserves facilities that reflect care, respect, and investment in the wellbeing of young people. A redeveloped skatepark would be a meaningful step toward demonstrating that commitment, while also recognising the legacy of someone who gave so much to our town.

I hope the council will consider prioritising this project as part of ongoing efforts to improve local amenities and support our youth. Thank you for your attention on this matter.
