Redesign Austin's Flag - Adopt the Capital Star Flag!
The Issue
Austin is a city renowned for its vibrant culture, rich history, and its role as Texas’s capital. However, the current city flag does not reflect the unique spirit and identity of our great city. As Austin continues to establish itself as an international destination, it’s time for a redesign that encapsulates Austin’s values and celebrates its legacy. I believe that a new municipal flag will serve as a symbol of unity, pride, and the innovative spirit that defines us as Austinites, just as the Lone Star Flag does for us as Texans.
This redesign of Austin’s city flag, which I dub the Capital Star Flag, is a homage to both the rich history of Texas and the city’s role as a cultural and governmental hub. At the heart of the flag is a gyronny star, symbolizing the "Lone Star State" and its independent spirit, a motif seen frequently in Texas government logos and Austin's official imagery. The red and white alternating pattern within the star directly references the red-white-red tricolor within the city seal, which itself symbolizes Austin as both a Texan city and a American city (to my knowledge the exact number of stripes in the city seal holds no meaning). The negative space around the star subtly forms blue triangles, echoing the blue isosceles triangle from the city seal, further mirroring the city seal. Additionally, the white portions of the gyronny star also form an abstracted depiction of the mantling around Stephen F. Austin's family's coat of arms, as well as the wings in the crest that rests on both Stephen F. Austin's coat of arms and the city seal, tying the design to the legacy of its namesake. The star is also "pointing up," mirroring the upward-facing chevrons in Stephen F. Austin's coat of arms, and symbolizing Austin as a "rising star" that always aspires to reach higher and higher heights.
The resemblance to the Texas Republic flag (a blue field charged with a solid yellow star) is also an intentional link to Austin’s place in Texas history, harkening back to its early days in the Republic of Texas. At the same time, this redesign hints at the natural beauty of Austin’s location, often referred to as the "City of the Violet Crown,” with the violet-leaning blue field of the flag capturing the tranquility of the city’s lakes, sky, and natural areas.
By using the red, white, and blue color scheme, the Capital Star Flag embodies Austin’s place within both Texas and the United States, representing unity and pride in the state’s and the nation's shared ideals. Additionally, the design’s use of a large, centered star mirrors the flags of other prominent Texas cities, reinforcing Austin’s position as a major Texas while still standing out as the state’s capital with its gyronny Lone Star.
The star itself is large, centered, and prominent with cyclical red and white “rays”—reflecting not only Austin’s significance as the capital of Texas but also as a beacon of innovation, leadership, and education, much like the oil lamp on the current flag symbolizes the city’s educational influence. As stars are often used to denote capitals in cartography, it is fitting to use the iconic Texas gyronny star to denote Austin as the capital of the Lone Star State.
In summary, this redesigned flag presents a thoughtful fusion of historical homage and cultural symbolism. It celebrates Austin’s significance in history, education, and politics, its position within Texas and the U.S., and its role as a modern leader in innovation and culture—all while maintaining the simplicity and aesthetic appeal required for a truly iconic city flag.

Design Philosophy & Symbolism:
Seal of the State of Texas
Austin City Seal (The Shield's Crest is Based off Stephen F. Austin's Coat of Arms)
Coat of Arms of Stephen F. Austin's Family
Burnet Flag (The National Flag of the Republic of Texas)
The Capitol Star Flag Among Other Texas City Flags
The Texas State Flag
The Capitol Star Flag - A Flag Fit for the Capital of the Lone Star State!
Why This Particular Redesign?
"Traditional" Variants:
The Capitol Star Flag - A Flag Fit for the Capital of the Lone Star State!
Disclaimer:
While I developed this redesign of the Austin flag independently, I acknowledge that the gyronny star is a common public domain motif in Texas iconography, and I do not claim ownership over its creation. Although I am the first to propose using a gyronny star for the Austin flag specifically, I recognize that I am not the first to incorporate a red-and-white gyronny five-point star into flag designs in general, as a handful of others have included a red-white gyronny star in recreational Texas state flag redesigns. Additionally, I adopted the specific shades of red and blue, as well as the white fimbriation around the star, for my main design from DeviantArt user MagnumDrako25, who used them in their Texas flag redesign, which can be found here. My original design (i.e. the "traditional variants"), however, was conceived entirely on my own before adjusting the color shades and fimbriation for a more modern look after seeing their design (which I had only discovered after completing my own initial design).
Edit (10/9/2024): After further research, I have discovered that Reddit user u/Titanium_Helm created a nearly identical flag in 2018 as a recreational redesign of the Texas state flag (among other U.S. state flag redesigns), which can be found here. To be clear, I was not aware of this design until writing this, and I likewise did not base my design off of theirs. That said, because we arrived at a nearly identical design, I must give credit to this designer.
