A paper questionnaire and information pack is being sent to every resident, business, school and nursery in the affected area. Following this, there will also be a survey of shoppers visiting the area. A letter will also be sent out to the surrounding areas informing them of the proposals and the consultation. The consultation closes on Friday 5 May. – Redbridge Council.
Dear petitioners,
We have all won a chance to have a say over parking plans for Wanstead. So it's important that we all respond to the consultation – and add criticism of the way it's been done, if you wish.
We Want Say participants repeatedly asked to be consulted while the questions were being drawn up. But we, among other local groups, were invited to meetings about the consultation as the documents started to be delivered. Other games are being played by the council. Because of proximity, some roads are naturally more popular with commuters than others, including the south-west roads Draycot and Tennyson. They are possibly at the top of the list for a call for restrictions. But now, amazingly, they are not covered by the published proposals! It appears that the council is engineering a big outcry, to use as publicity: "Residents outside the area are demanding restrictions".
Please note that for Wanstead, the charge for a residential property's first car has already shot up by just over 33 per cent in two months. (It is now £60 instead of £45.) The council still denies that the scheme is a money-making exercise, nor does it acknowledge that it will make a fortune from parking penalties (another main aim of these schemes).
For it to be gold standard, as promised, there should be a "Do nothing" option on the questionnaire. Instead the questions in the leaflets are biased towards the council's objective of introducing parking controls.
Whether you are for or against parking restrictions, we take this opportunity to reiterate that We Want Say's top priority has been for residents and businesses to be fully consulted and fully informed. And for you to say what you want.
