In 2015, Red Deer Public Schools was praised for its policy on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identification (SOGI). The policy states, among other things, that the district shall establish consistent school based policies and practices to ensure LGBTQ+ students, staff and families are welcomed, accepted and included in all aspects of education. The policy also says the district shall provide and promote opportunities for staff to increase their awareness and understanding of discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, and adds that the district shall commit to ongoing, constructing and open dialogue with LGBTQ+ community members.

On Feb 11th, 2021 it was locally published that Red Deer Public Schools trustees voted down Pride week motion in favor of Diversity Week.  Simply put, the school board is not abiding by the very policy they were recognized for in 2015.   There is no reason why we shouldn’t give Pride Week proper recognition over the duration of the school year.

We know that our LGBTQ+ community experiences challenges far more significant than any generally diverse population.  These children deserve to feel welcomed, accepted and included in their education community and beyond.  The very role of the trustees is to advocate for groups of children who are vulnerable.  It is clear own school board trustees have neglected this responsibility and is simply unacceptable.

Regardless of whether or not your children are part of the LGBTQ+ community, surely this is not the path you want paved for their future.

Be the change.  Give our children the support they deserve - in schools and beyond.
