Our food system is in trouble, and we must help. Animals, people, and even the Earth are suffering. There is only one winner in this: agribusinesses. Agribusinesses are a type of business that specializes in agriculture. These businesses are corrupting our food system. Now you are probably wondering how exactly we are suffering. Let's start with animals. The cows that are most likely in your burger were most likely from a feedlot. A feedlot is a feeding ground for animals like steers. They are not swell places. Most of the cows there are fed corn and old organs for every single one of their meals. They don't live long either. Most cattle only live for between 18 months and 2 years. At the end of their short life, the cattle are slaughtered by a shot in the forehead. Why does this happen? Because the agribusinesses want money. They try to produce the beef in the cheapest way possible. But animals aren't the only ones that are suffering; we are, too. Oftentimes, the steers get fed antibiotics for no reason at all. The owners want the steers to stay healthy. When we consume the beef from the cow, some of the antibiotics go into us. Too many antibiotics in our bodies can create antibiotic resistance. That is when harmful bacteria in our bodies adapt to antibiotics. When the bacteria do that, antibiotics can't kill them anymore. Our food system is also harming the Earth. When farmers over-farm their crops (mostly corn), the land becomes less fertile. After a while, it becomes unusable. I want to create a government agency that addresses these issues and helps our food system be the best it can be. As well as signing my petition, you can help by buying local products, and maybe getting CSA. By supporting local sustainable practices, voting with your fork against agribusinesses.
