Reconsider the destination of our geography excursion
The Issue
As students of the Department of Geography, we are at the heart of every educational journey. Our learning experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, shape our understanding of the world. This year, our department has planned an excursion to Ghatshila, but many of us are uncomfortable with this choice due to several concerns related to cost and suitability.
The proposed fee of INR 6,000 for Ghatshila seems exorbitant to many students considering its location and the facilities available. With transportation, accommodation, and food, this amount does not appear to be justified, especially when considering the financial constraints many of us face. We believe this cost barrier could discourage student participation, undermining the educational purpose of the excursion.
Moreover, while Ghatshila has its charms, it might not offer the geographical diversity we seek as geography students. We aim for excursions that not only provide leisure but offer substantial academic value and engage us in meaningful ways with the environment we are studying. Therefore, we propose considering alternative destinations that might offer richer experiences at either a similar or justifiable increased cost.
Possible alternatives could include areas with diverse geographical features that support our curriculum, providing both an educational boost and a more memorable experience. For example, destinations with mountainous landscapes, rivers, and varied ecosystems nearby could offer more educational value. If budget constraints are an issue, we propose a reduction in amenities rather than compromising on the educational aspect.
By reconsidering the destination or revising the fee structure for Ghatshila, the department can ensure higher participation and enthusiasm among students, enhancing the overall success of the excursion. Let us prioritize a destination that aligns with our academic goals while being considerate of student financial situations.
We appreciate your understanding and urge the department to consider our request, allowing this excursion to be both an affordable and fulfilling experience for everyone involved. Please sign this petition to support a more inclusive and educationally enriching geography excursion.
