Reconsider the Colorado Springs School D11 Cell Phone Policy

Reconsider the Colorado Springs School D11 Cell Phone Policy
The Issue
This school year (2024-2025), we, the students at Coronado High School, were introduced to a phone policy that requires us to put our phones in a pouch with a magnetic lock during the school day. This policy was enacted to prevent the spread of online misinformation regarding potential school threats and foster better in-class interactions. However, the policy has been ineffective, as there has been at least one threat this year despite its implementation, the district school board has now seen that even without our phones our district still gets threats and therefore the action to restrict our phone usage to prevent threats and misinformation online has failed, it seems our school board is doing their bare minimum to ensure us as students to a safe and kind learning space.
Further, this policy denies students access to their devices, denying them the ability to contact parents or guardians if necessary during the school day.
We urge the Colorado Springs School D11 to reconsider this policy. We request the introduction of a more balanced, flexible policy that not only discourages unethical and distracting use of phones in school but also allows for their constructive usage. Let us refine the usage of these tools for learning, instead of eliminating the use. Sign this petition to support reconsidering the Colorado Springs School D11 Cell Phone Policy.
I do believe the district can go a better way to address phone usage in classes.
There should be some sort of policy restricting phone use in class. This could look like preventing their use during instruction and during personal work time or only allowing phone use for reasonable purposes, like taking photos for classes or during class break time.
This is why I would like to introduce a more flexible but strict policy that can foster phone usage in classrooms, that may look like using phones to take photos of bell schedules, or in-class materials like homework page # or class notes, using phones during lunch or when all class work is completed (this means ALL CLASS WORK). Also, this should allow kids and parents to get ahold of each other if needed. We could also implement a trial period for a modified policy or a compromise, such as allowing phone use during certain periods (e.g., lunch or breaks), there could also be an implementation of a box in classes for students to put their phones in until the teacher allows that student to use their phone once all of the teachers requirements are met.
I have spoken to parents on this matter and many have told me they do not trust the school to get ahold of their child properly and to tell them what they need or want, parents would like to personally text or get ahold of their child more preferably than going through the process of calling the front office then have the office communicate with their child, this whole process is stressful for parents, especially if that parent is at work or busy with their time.
