The Issue

Nestled in our beloved village of Canajoharie is a natural gem known fondly to us all as the Boiling Pot and Canajoharie Gorge. For as long as many of us can remember, this magnificent site has not only been an emblem of our community's beauty but also a cherished destination for family gatherings, leisurely strolls, and a variety of outdoor activities. Multiple generations have formed deep bonds with this area, carving out countless memories beneath its serene canopy.

Recently, the Village Board decided to close the Gorge indefinitely, citing concerns over public safety. While the safety of our community is paramount, this decision has deeply affected the residents, stripping us of a vital space that contributes immensely to the cultural and social fabric of our village. The decision risks making Canajoharie less appealing to current and prospective residents, potentially impacting the well-being and vibrancy of our community.

Indeed, safeguarding public safety should remain a priority, but it is also crucial to explore alternatives that allow continued access to this invaluable resource. Many municipalities around the country, facing similar challenges, have implemented solutions such as increased signage, monitored entry points, and designated safe areas, ensuring both protection and enjoyment of public spaces.

Let us learn from these examples and work together to develop a practical and sustainable plan that addresses safety concerns without resorting to complete closure. We propose that the Village Board allocate taxpayer funds towards enhanced safety measures, such as fencing needed areas, offering safety education programs, and possibly introducing lifeguards or volunteer safety stewards during peak hours.

We believe that with collaborative discussion and innovative thinking, we can find a balanced approach. This will not only preserve the Gorge's accessibility for all who cherish it but can also elevate our village's reputation as a community that values both its natural treasures and the safety of its residents.

We urge the Canajoharie Village Board to reconsider their decision, and to partner with the community in forming a plan that respects public safety while keeping the Gorge open and vibrant. Please sign this petition to show your support for keeping the Canajoharie Gorge accessible, safe, and cherished as an integral part of our community.
