Reconsider the Cellphone Policy in LCPS

The Issue

As a resident of Loudoun County, VA, and a middle schooler, I witness every day how the complete ban on cellphones in public schools negatively impacts my peers and me. Students have become increasingly uninterested in school and have developed sneaky behaviors from this policy. Many of us have phones and wish to use them not only for socialization but also for educational purposes during our free time of block change. The current policy prohibits this entirely, leaving us disadvantaged in today's increasingly digital world.

Studies show that 95% of teens in the U.S. have access to a smartphone, and 45% are online constantly. Restricting such a prevalent tool in today's digital age, even during free periods, is not only counterproductive but also unrealistic. These devices can be an effective supplement to the learning process when managed correctly. The current phone policy just encourages resistance, prevents the development of self-regulation skills, and hinders opportunities to integrate technology into lesson plans.

Our petition is not advocating for unrestricted use of cellphones in classrooms, but rather for a more flexible policy that could allow monitored and purposeful use during allocated times, like free periods or block changes.

Join us in urging the educational authorities of Loudoun County to reconsider the complete ban on cellphones in public schools and to develop a policy that allows students to use this tool in a responsible and beneficial manner. Your signature can make a difference. Sign this petition now.
