Reconsider Skyline's Smoking Policies in Their Apartments

The Issue

I have been a resident of an apartment complex recently acquired by Skyline for over a decade, along with several other long-term tenants. We were taken aback when new policies were introduced, including the declaration of "Smoke-free buildings". As smokers, we feel unfairly singled out and treated as if we are carriers of some undesirable disease. We are now relegated to the edges of the property to smoke, unable to enjoy our own living spaces like others.

Smoking is a personal choice and while it is understood that it can have health implications for non-smokers through second-hand smoke exposure, there should be consideration for designated smoking areas within the building or on the balconies. According to Statistics Canada in 2017, approximately 16% of Canadians aged 12 and older (roughly 5 million people) smoked either daily or occasionally. This significant number indicates that smokers are not a negligible minority whose rights can be overlooked.

We urge Skyline and its management in Kawartha Lakes, ON, Canada to reconsider their stringent smoking policies. There should be room for compromise that respects everyone's rights and preferences within their own living space without infringing upon those of others.

Please sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment for all residents regardless of their personal habits or choices.
