Reconsider rejection of our pub's decking in Leith

The Issue

My name is Michael Lynch, one of the owners/operators of The keelson, a local pub that has been serving the community of Leith, Edinburgh, since June 2026. Recently, we faced a significant setback when our application to retain our newly constructed decking area at the front of our establishment was rejected by the council. This decision has weighed heavily on our business, and I'm reaching out to gather support from our community and beyond to appeal this decision.

The decking area was developed with the intention of enhancing the customer experience and providing more outdoor seating options, particularly in response to changing public health guidelines that encourage outdoor socializing. With the Scottish weather often limiting the use of outdoor spaces, we invested in high-quality materials to ensure the decking is both aesthetically pleasing and durable, making our pub a more inviting place for locals and visitors alike.

Our decision to build this area was made after careful consideration and consultation with customers and local businesses. We have adhered to safety and zoning regulations, ensuring that the decking is not intrusive to pedestrians or traffic. Beyond its practical benefits, the decking also helps us control larger groups outside to be more considerate to our neighbours and also make the entrance safer as the pavement leading to our entrance is uneven with loose paving.

The council’s decision to reject our application is not just a business hurdle; it's a personal blow to the vibrant community spirit we aim to foster through our pub. The Keelson is not just a business for us; it's a community hub, a place where relationships are built and memories are made. We believe that maintaining the decking will continue to contribute positively to the socio-economic fabric of Leith.

By signing this petition, you're not just supporting a small business but also championing the spirit of community and vibrancy that makes Leith unique. We are committed to working with the council to address any outstanding concerns and hope they will reconsider their decision in favor of a solution that benefits everyone.

Please add your voice to ours by signing this petition to help us preserve a vital part of our business and community. Your support means the world to us, and together, we can make a difference.
