Edmonton's City Council has recently introduced new patio fees that present a significant challenge to small, local businesses that have come to rely on these vital community spaces. Industry participants, particularly family-run operations like ours, have heavily invested in year-round patios under the pilot program to foster community spirit, contribute to the city's vibrancy, and enhance downtown safety.

During the pilot program, the introduction of patios was a boost to communities, providing more inviting and dynamic environments that benefitted residents and tourists alike. These patios quickly became cornerstones of community interaction, drawing people together and supporting neighboring businesses through increased foot traffic and an atmosphere of shared enjoyment.

However, with the implementation of these new fees, the added financial burden on small businesses threatens to undo the progress made during the pilot phase. Many are already struggling to cover rising operational costs in the current economic climate, and fees of nearly $7,000 annually put the long-term sustainability of these creative, community-focused spaces in serious question.

With the Rocky Mountain Icehouse and Cask & Barrel patio builds during the pilot, we made significant investments in permanent pergola structures and heating systems to make year-round patios feasible. These were not temporary additions, but long-term commitments made in good faith.

If the City does not revisit this approach, once these patios are taken down, it is unlikely we would be able to reinvest and rebuild to the same extent.

We are urging the City Council to reconsider or pause these new patio fees. We ask that they collaborate with local businesses to devise a solution that supports economic sustainability while maintaining vibrant community spaces. By working together, Edmonton can continue to nurture a thriving downtown core that benefits businesses, residents, and visitors.
