Reconsider location of modular homes in X̱wún̓eḵw Park as part of HEART and HEARTH program

The Issue

The District of Squamish plans to establish modular homes near key thoroughfares and community parks (X̱wún̓eḵw Park and Junction Park) as part of the "HEART and HEARTH" housing program. This program provides funding from the province to transition homeless folks in encampments by housing them in modular temporary homes.

While this initiative aims to address pressing housing needs, it raises profound concerns about the integration of high-needs, low-barrier housing within spaces frequented by children and families, and directly alongside what is to be the only pedestrian route to school for a significant number of children. Placing individuals facing complex social challenges next to busy children’s play areas and parks could lead to unintended safety issues. The poor choice of location and lack of due process is what concerns me personally.

In addition to safety concerns, this could lead to a huge negative impact on businesses located in downtown, as well as damaging the appeal of the most visited Squamish location for tourism and social gatherings.

Research indicates that well-integrated social housing projects in thoughtfully selected locations can enhance community health and safety. The current proposal has merit but overlooks the potential hazards of merging high foot traffic and vulnerable groups. We need to reconsider the site choice to ensure the safety and welfare of all Squamish residents.

I appeal to the District of Squamish and the developers of the "HEART and HEARTH" program to thoroughly reassess their proposed locations for these modular homes. Alternative sites that promote inclusivity without compromising safety should be explored. Well-planned implementation in suitable locations can still fulfil the initiative's goals while upholding community wellbeing.

Your support in urging the local authorities to revisit their plans is crucial. Let’s work together to ensure Squamish remains a welcoming, secure, and harmonious place for everyone. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard. Our community deserves a say in how its most prominent public spaces are utilized.
