Reconsider location of liquor and vape store near school
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents, parents, educators, business owners, and members of the Glendale community, respectfully request that the City of Glendale and the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control carefully review the proposed liquor license and operation of Hill's Convenience Beer, Wine & Vape, located at 3502 W. Union Hills Drive, immediately adjacent to Desert Heights Preparatory Academy.
As a community, we value the education and well-being of our children above all else. The proximity of a liquor and vape store to a preschool and a 6-12 school poses significant concerns. Studies consistently show that exposure to alcohol and vaping products at an early age can increase the likelihood of developing risky behaviors. According to the CDC, children who are exposed to environments that promote substance use are more likely to begin using alcohol and nicotine themselves.
Beyond the educational perspective, there's a moral responsibility to shield young minds from influences that could negatively impact their health and future choices. Furthermore, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism warns that early alcohol use can alter brain development, potentially leading to lifelong consequences. Meanwhile, the CDC highlights the rapidly growing epidemic of e-cigarette use among youth, emphasizing the addictive potential of nicotine.
Our community thrives when local businesses succeed. Yet, we must ensure that these businesses coexist harmoniously with the core values and safety standards of our neighborhoods. We support economic development but urge you to consider relocation alternatives for Hill's Convenience Beer, Wine & Vape to ensure that young students are not unduly influenced by adult-centric environments.
By signing this petition, you are taking a stand to protect our children, uphold the values of our community, and ensure that Glendale remains a safe and nurturing place for all residents. Please join us in urging the City of Glendale and the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control to reconsider the location of this establishment. Sign the petition today to make your voice heard.
