Reconsider ban on kratom sale in Spokane County

Reconsider ban on kratom sale in Spokane County
The Issue
There are individuals in Spokane County who responsibly use the Kratom leaf to manage chronic pain and avoid heavier opiates. Kratom has provided a lifeline for many, offering an improved quality of life and a pathway away from substances more damaging and addictive than it is. Instead of a complete ban, we believe that implementing reasonable regulations could serve the community better and preserve access for those who genuinely benefit from it.
The current proposal to ban the sale of Kratom would unfairly punish those who rely on it for legitimate medical and therapeutic purposes. There is a pressing need to address the misuse of strong products containing 7-OH (Feel Good) Kratom often found on gas station counters. We propose that these products be kept out of easy reach, just like the Kratom leaf powder and capsules, by placing them behind glass. More importantly, we advocate for enforcing an age restriction, making them available only to customers aged 21 and over, with mandatory ID checks.
The ongoing opioid crisis in the United States is a testament to the need for safe alternatives for pain management and addiction recovery. Recent studies suggest that with proper regulation and oversight, Kratom can remain a valuable resource for those battling chronic pain and addiction. According to the American Kratom Association, millions of Americans use Kratom responsibly, finding it to be a key component in preventing relapse and supporting recovery.
By regulating rather than banning Kratom, Spokane County can set a precedent for other communities, offering a balanced approach that respects individual choice while prioritizing public health. Let's work together to create a logical, compassionate policy that considers the well-being of all residents.
With this petition, we urge the Spokane County officials to reconsider the ban and instead focus on creating a structured and regulated framework for Kratom sales that takes into account both community safety and individual needs. Please sign this petition to ensure that a valuable resource remains available to those who need it most.
