Reconfigure Kessler Blvd to improve safety
The Issue
On July 10th, 2026, a speeding vehicle lost control on Kessler Blvd and crashed into my home. It was a terrifying experience that shook my family and highlighted a serious concern within our community in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. I have witnessed numerous car accidents along Kessler Blvd, between College Ave. and Keystone Ave., and have heard countless stories from neighbors about similar collisions over the years.
The core issue lies in the current configuration of Kessler Blvd, which accommodates four lanes without a dedicated turn lane. This design encourages speeding and increases the chances of accidents, as drivers frequently have to change lanes abruptly to avoid stopped vehicles making left turns. It's time for us to prioritize safety on our roads and implement a solution that can protect all residents who live, walk, bike, or drive along Kessler Blvd daily.
I am advocating for the reconfiguration of Kessler Blvd from its current four lanes to three lanes, with the addition of a dedicated turn lane (AKA. “Road Diet”). A change that has worked well on the section of Kessler Blvd just east of Keystone Ave. to Allisonville Rd. This change can significantly enhance safety for everyone who uses this road. Cities across the country have successfully implemented similar road diets, resulting in fewer accidents, decreased speeds, and improved traffic flow. According to the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration), converting a four-lane undivided roadway to a three-lane roadway can reduce crash frequencies by an average of 19% to 47%. By making this necessary change, we not only look after our immediate safety but also contribute to a more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly environment, promoting healthier and more connected communities. We need the support of the Indianapolis City Council and the Department of Public Works to implement this change.
