Recognize the Boston Bull Terrier, rename the breed.

The Issue

It's frustrating when people continually misidentify our beloved Boston Terriers, mistaking them for pugs or French bulldogs. As a proud owner, I know firsthand how tiresome it is to explain their lineage—that they are a cousin to the French bulldog and a direct descendant of the English bulldog. Isn't it time to end this confusion once and for all through a name that truly represents their heritage?

Originally bred in the United States in the 19th century, the Boston Terrier, often affectionately called the ‘American Gentleman,’ is well-known for its friendly demeanor, tuxedo-like markings, and compact size. Despite their popularity, their name often obscures their bulldog lineage, leading to unnecessary corrections and lengthy explanations.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) can address this by officially recognizing Boston Terriers as Boston Bull Terriers. A name change would pay homage to their bulldog ancestry, embracing their stout bodies, characteristic underbites, short noses, and, in many cases, the absence of a tail. Importantly, it highlights their shared traits with other bulldog breeds, which include heat intolerance due to their brachycephalic nature.

Not only would this change honor the historical background of the breed, but it would also bring clarity among dog enthusiasts and the public, eliminating the need for repetitive explanations. Given that the AKC acknowledges the importance of breed names reflecting a dog’s background and characteristics, this change aligns with their standards of breed representation.

With 10,000 signatures, we can present a strong case to the AKC to reconsider and update the name. Join me in this endeavor to give our Boston Terriers the recognition they deserve. Rally together for the Boston Bull Terrier! Sign the petition to show your support for this worthy cause and assist in bringing about this much-needed change.
