Recognize Rural ODOT Highway Maintenance Workers as Essential During Weather Events

The Issue

As a Highway Maintenance Worker II in for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) in the Mt.Hood mountain pass, I witness first-hand the treacherous conditions we face during winter months. We report to work regardless of road or weather conditions, battling blizzards, fatalities, blackouts, ice storms and rerouted traffic from other highways and interstates. We work in these dangerous conditions putting our lives on the line for public safety.

Despite this, our efforts often go unrecognized. We are not considered essential workers during weather events in our sections, especially in mountain passes, -a designation that would afford us an Essential Worker Differential. This is not only an issue of fair compensation but also one of respect and recognition for the risks we take and the vital service we provide.

According to data from ODOT's own reports, mountain pass workers are regularly exposed to hazardous situations with 20% more accidents occurring during severe weather events (source: ODOT Annual Safety Report). This statistic underscores just how critical our role is in maintaining safe passage for all Oregonians.

We call upon legislators and management at ODOT to acknowledge us as essential workers during weather events in mountain passes. Granting us this status will provide tangible recognition for our hard-fought efforts ensuring public safety amidst extreme conditions.

Please sign this petition if you believe that those who risk their lives maintaining safe roads should be recognized as essential workers!
