Recognize profound autism as distinct for better policy and support

Recognize profound autism as distinct for better policy and support
The Issue
My son has profound autism. He is nonverbal, has significant sensory and medical needs, and will require lifelong support to stay safe and cared for. Autism is often discussed as a single experience; our reality is very different. Systems built around a broad, one-size-fits-all definition of autism routinely fail, leaving families without adequate services, protections, or support. Recognition of profound autism is not about exclusion; it's about ensuring that our vulnerable are seen and protected.
Profound autism affects individuals who require intensive support throughout their lives. In the United States alone, an estimated 20-30% of those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder fit this description. Despite this, our current systems at federal and state levels fail to differentiate between those with varying needs on the autism spectrum. This results in insufficient access to specialized services, appropriate funding, and tailored policy-making that could otherwise safeguard and enhance the quality of life for those with profound autism.
Policies, funding, and services often overlook the intense needs of individuals like my son. Without recognizing profound autism as its distinct category, these individuals remain invisible within broader autism policies. This lack of recognition leads to gaps in crucial services, leaving families to struggle on their own in search of the care and support that their loved ones require.
Federal and state agencies have the power to change this by formally recognizing profound autism as a distinct high support disability category. By doing so, policies can accurately reflect the realities these individuals face, ensuring they receive the necessary protections and services tailored to their lifelong needs.
We ask lawmakers and policy makers to take this critical step. This change is not just about adjustments in terminology; it is a foundational shift that will help create a fairer, more inclusive system. We urge you to understand the essential need for this recognition so that families like mine can have their loved ones cared for with dignity and respect.
Please join us in calling for this necessary change. Sign this petition to advocate for the formal recognition of profound autism to better serve those who need it most.
