The Issue

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a condition that profoundly impacts the lives of those who live with it. Yet, despite its debilitating effects, it remains unrecognized as a disability by key entities like the Department of Justice and the U.S. Congress. This lack of recognition means countless individuals are left fighting an uphill battle for the accommodations and support they desperately need.

POTS can significantly impact an individual’s ability to participate fully in everyday life. Many people with POTS face dismissal, underestimation, and a lack of essential support. The challenges are not limited to medical concerns: they affect education, employment, and overall quality of life. Students who cannot stand for extended periods, employees who experience frequent absences, and individuals who struggle with routine daily tasks face real and pressing barriers that proper recognition as a disability could help address.

According to Dysautonomia International, POTS affects an estimated 1 to 3 million Americans. This is not a rare condition, and there has been a significant increase in diagnoses reported since the COVID-19 pandemic. Symptoms such as rapid heart rate, dizziness, and fainting can make simple activities daunting, yet these very symptoms often lead to misunderstandings or misdiagnoses. With proper recognition as a disability, those with POTS could access the accommodations needed to fully participate in work, school, and society without facing undue hardship.

We need the Department of Justice and the U.S. Congress to amend current policies to recognize POTS as a disabling condition officially. This includes ensuring access to reasonable accommodations in educational, employment, and public settings. Training programs for medical professionals and educators should be implemented to increase awareness and understanding of the condition.

By signing this petition, you join a movement fighting for the rights and recognition of POTS patients across the United States. Help us ensure that no one has to fight for legitimacy alongside their health battles. Together, we can advocate for change and make a substantial difference in the lives of those affected by POTS.

Please sign this petition to urge the Department of Justice and U.S. Congress to officially recognize POTS as a disability.
