The Issue

I'm Kristofer Florendo, President of the Kraken Esports Club, a passionate gamer who has seen first-hand the power of gaming to foster teamwork and cultivate competitive skills. Growing up, gaming wasn't merely a hobby; it was a vital part of my life and development. Today, our generation is intrinsically linked to gaming, which offers extraordinary opportunities for personal growth and community engagement.

At Modesto Junior College, esports remains unrecognized as an official campus program, despite its tremendous potential to enhance student life and provide new avenues of opportunity. The Kraken Esports Club, a dedicated group of student gamers, is forced to operate merely as a club. This status means all expenses are shouldered by the students themselves, posing significant financial barriers and limiting the team's ability to compete at the highest levels.

The demand for an esports program is undeniable, with many students expressing strong interest in both participating and spectating. Recognizing esports officially would not only validate the skills and interests of our student body but also enhance the college experience by offering more inclusive and diverse opportunities.

Esports has grown globally, and educational institutions worldwide are recognizing the benefits, including improved engagement, increased retention, and the development of critical skills such as strategic thinking, communication, and adaptability. Colleges and universities that have embraced esports are seeing a positive impact on student success and community bond.

The Kraken Esports Club is already thriving within the competitive collegiate leagues, rivaling even fully funded institutions. All that is required from Modesto Junior College is the official recognition and support to allow Kraken Esports to flourish as an official program. This support would enable our students to focus on enhancing their skills without financial strain, and it would position MJC as a leader in embracing innovative and future-oriented activities.

I urge Modesto Junior College to take action and recognize esports as an official campus program. This decision will transform the student experience, allowing passionate gamers to pursue their interests seriously and equitably.

Please join me in petitioning MJC to recognize esports officially and give our students the opportunities they deserve. Sign this petition to show your support for our community's growth and evolution.
