The Issue
Endometriosis has deeply affected my life and millions of others, as it is among the most painful diseases a person can endure. The chronic pain from this disease makes it incredibly challenging for many women, including myself, to sustain full-time employment and to maintain a high quality of life. Despite its prevalence and the severity of its symptoms, endometriosis is not officially recognized as a debilitating disease in the United States, which limits access to necessary resources and support for those struggling against it every day.
Endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 women of reproductive age in the U.S.—about 6.5 million women overall. It occurs when the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus grows outside of it, causing severe pain and potentially leading to fertility issues. Its impact is not just physical; it also places a heavy emotional and psychological burden on those living with it, often leading to depression and anxiety.
The lack of recognition of endometriosis as a debilitating disease undervalues the suffering and struggles faced by those with the condition. Proper recognition can lead to better diagnostic protocols, improved access to medical care and treatments, and more comprehensive insurance coverage. Currently, many women face significant financial burdens, as the cost of managing endometriosis can be exorbitant.
Furthermore, greater recognition would foster increased research efforts, which is crucial in finding better treatments and, ultimately, a cure for this debilitating condition. We deserve a healthcare system that acknowledges the intensity of our pain and challenges and provides the resources we need to live fulfilling lives.
Join me in urging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and our lawmakers to recognize endometriosis as a debilitating disease. With your signature, we can push for policy changes that ensure endometriosis is treated with the seriousness it deserves and that those affected are provided with the support, care, and relief they urgently need.
Please, sign this petition today to bring attention and hope to millions suffering in silence.
