Recognition of Prince Reza Pahlavi as the Leader of Iran’s Democratic Transition
To: The Government of Canada
We, the undersigned, including Iranian-Canadians, Canadians, Permanent Residents of Canada with an Iranian background, and supporters of democracy, human rights, Canadian national interests, and international stability, respectfully urge the Government of Canada to take an important, timely, and constructive step in response to Iran’s ongoing national crisis.
For over four decades, the Islamic Republic of Iran has ruled through systemic repression, widespread human rights violations, political violence, and the denial of fundamental freedoms. Its political, moral, and legal legitimacy has been irreversibly eroded, and that is a reality evident both inside Iran and across the international community.
A Credible and Democratic Transitional Leader
At this historic juncture, Prince Reza Pahlavi has emerged as a democratic, unifying, and nationally recognized leader for Iran’s transition period. He has repeatedly and unequivocally affirmed that he does not seek permanent power and is committed solely to a time-limited transitional role that enables the Iranian people to freely determine their future.
His publicly articulated transition framework is grounded in clear and universally recognized democratic principles, including:
- Preservation of Iran’s territorial integrity
- Separation of religion and state
- Protection of individual liberties and equality of all citizens
- Free and fair elections under international observation
- The Iranian people’s right to choose their final system of governance
- Prepared Not Only for Change But for the Day After
The Iranian democratic movement under Prince Reza Pahlavi’s leadership has not been focused solely on regime change. It is demonstrably prepared for the day after: ensuring stability, preventing chaos, rebuilding national institutions and economy, and engaging constructively with the international community.
A clear and transparent transition roadmap, developed with the support of experienced, highly educated experts, reflects responsible, accountable leadership that serves its people, contributes to regional stability, and upholds international values and norms.
Broad Public Support and National Consensus
Prince Reza Pahlavi is supported by diverse segments of Iranian society, both inside Iran and across the global diaspora, including civil society activists, human rights defenders, professionals in various fields, labour groups, ethnic minorities, women, youth, the LGBT community, and victims of state repression. Widespread public mobilization and international advocacy demonstrate a growing national consensus around his role as a unifying transitional figure.
Even under the harshest conditions of repression inside Iran, where public expression carries severe risk, the Iranian people have repeatedly and openly called for Prince Reza Pahlavi by name, which makes this sustained, courageous support the strongest and most authentic source of his legitimacy.
A Win-Win Outcome for Iranians, Canada, and the Democratic World
Recognizing Prince Reza Pahlavi as the leader of Iran’s transitional period is a win-win outcome:
For Iranians, it offers a peaceful, orderly, and democratic path out of dictatorship, and towards Iran’s prosperity
For Canada and the West, it aligns with their longstanding commitment to human rights, and democratic governance, and it will provide win-win opportunities for investments and rebuilding projects
For the international community, it reduces the risks of power vacuums, regional instability, terrorism, and humanitarian crises
Such recognition would not predetermine Iran’s final political system. Rather, it would be a pragmatic, time-sensitive, and responsible step to facilitate diplomatic coordination, international engagement, and an orderly transition which fully respects the Iranian people’s right to self-determination.
Our Request
We therefore respectfully call on the Government of Canada to:
Formally recognize Prince Reza Pahlavi as the national leader of Iran’s transitional period
Engage with him as the legitimate representative of the democratic opposition and the Iranians
Support a peaceful, democratic, and people-led transition in Iran
History will remember those who stood on the right side of democracy at decisive moments. Canada has the opportunity to do so now.
Respectfully,
The Undersigned
