The Issue
Living with an underactive thyroid has deeply affected my life for the past eight years. The constant fatigue, weight management difficulties, and mental fogginess make daily tasks overwhelmingly challenging. I share my story not only to seek understanding but to advocate for thousands of others who silently endure similar struggles. Our goal is to have hypothyroidism recognized as a disability to ensure that those diagnosed receive the necessary support.
Underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism, affects approximately 1 in 20 people in the UK, yet it remains a hidden disability due to the lack of visible symptoms. It's time that this condition is recognised for the profound impact it has on people's lives. Those affected often face an uphill battle in managing their weight, maintaining energy levels, and addressing associated mental health concerns.
Beyond recognition, the healthcare system must improve its support for individuals with an underactive thyroid. This includes access to comprehensive treatment plans that address both the physical and psychological aspects, and offering resources for effective weight management strategies. Individuals should not have to navigate these challenges alone, without the backing of the healthcare system.
I am urging the government and healthcare authorities to provide more resources, research, and support networks for hypothyroidism patients. By recognising this condition as a disability, we can pave the way for greater empathy, understanding, and targeted support.
Please join me in signing this petition to urge policymakers to acknowledge hypothyroidism as a disability and to enhance the support provided to those affected. Together, we can create change for the betterment of all individuals battling this condition.
