The Issue

My daughter was born at 24 weeks and spent a grueling 16 weeks in the NICU before finally coming home. Our journey was filled with uncertainty and a profound lack of guidance, leaving us to navigate her future without a clear roadmap. Despite years of advocacy and research into the long-term effects of prematurity, we continually encounter a healthcare system and educational framework that largely overlooks the specific needs and challenges faced by children born pre-term.

Pre-term birth, defined as birth before 34 weeks of gestation, poses significant challenges to those affected and their families. Scientific studies have revealed the potential for long-term developmental, neurological, and respiratory complications related to early deliveries, yet these risks are often under-recognized by healthcare providers and educators. Without a formal acknowledgment of pre-term birth as a diagnosis in itself, countless families are left with insufficient support and resources to prepare for and address the unique needs of their children.

Formal recognition of pre-term birth as a medical diagnosis would lead to more targeted medical guidelines, enhanced educational resources, and increased funding for research into its associated risks and complications. Such recognition would provide a structured framework for caregivers and families, enabling them to better advocate for the interventions and support necessary for their children to thrive.

Inadequate support for families dealing with pre-term birth is not just an oversight; it is a systemic issue that urgently needs addressing. By recognising pre-term birth as a diagnosis, we can ensure that healthcare professionals, educators, and policymakers are equipped to offer the specialised support and resources these children desperately need.

I urge policymakers, medical associations, and educational institutions to take a stand. We must acknowledge and address the unique challenges faced by children born pre-term. Let us ensure that no family feels alone or unsupported in this journey.

Please sign this petition to advocate for the formal recognition of pre-term birth as its distinct diagnosis. Together, we can affect change and build a more supportive future for all children born prematurely and their families.
