Recognise Peter Sterling & Brett Kenny as Immortals in 2027
The issue
Help make two Parramatta legends Immortals in the Eels' 80th Anniversary Year.
In 2027, the Parramatta Eels celebrate 80 years since entering the NSW Rugby League premiership in 1947.
We believe there could be no more fitting way to mark this milestone than for Peter Sterling and Brett Kenny to be elevated to Rugby League Immortal status.
Sterling and Kenny were the halves combination at the heart of Parramatta's greatest era. Together they helped take a club that had waited 35 years for its first premiership to four premierships in six seasons — 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1986.
But their case for Immortality extends far beyond Parramatta.
Both represented New South Wales and Australia with distinction, and both toured with the legendary undefeated 1982 Kangaroos touring team — "The Invincibles", and both returned as members of the undefeated 1986 Kangaroo touring team — "The Unbeatables".
Both are already members of the NRL Hall of Fame and were selected in the NRL Team of the 1980s. Their individual achievements were extraordinary. Their records in comparison with existing Immortals Andrew Johns and Wally Lewis proves why Sterling and Kenny should become Immortals.
Sterling's official NRL Hall of Fame record confirms his four premierships, 1982 and 1986 Kangaroo tours, two Rothmans Medals, two Dally M Medals, four Halfback of the Year awards, 1986 Clive Churchill Medal and 1987 Golden Boot. That gives the campaign a particularly simple statistical argument: Sterling won twice as many premierships as Johns and equalled Johns' four Dally M Halfback of the Year awards. Johns had the longer representative career and won three Dally M Medals and two Golden Boots, so the argument should not be that Sterling's record is better than Johns'. Rather, it is that Sterling's record is sufficiently comparable to an existing Immortal to demonstrate that he belongs in the same discussion.
Kenny's official NRL Hall of Fame record confirms he was one of rugby league's greatest big-game players, scoring two tries in each of Parramatta's 1981, 1982 and 1983 Grand Final victories. He won the 1985 Golden Boot and, remarkably, was selected ahead of Immortal Wally Lewis at five-eighth for all three Ashes Tests on the 1982 Kangaroo tour. Wally Lewis himself has said on several occasions that Kenny was the best player he ever saw in State of Origin football, and there is further corroboration on Wally Lewis's own official website, which says that Lewis “still regards Kenny as the finest five-eighth he ever faced.”
The Immortal honour is reserved for players who left an extraordinary and lasting mark on rugby league. Peter Sterling and Brett Kenny did exactly that. Peter Sterling and Brett Kenny are not simply Parramatta supporters' choices for Immortal status. Both were among the greats considered by the Immortals judging panel in 2012, and both were again reported among the contenders when the 14th Immortal was selected in 2024.
THEY HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED BEFORE. NOW IT'S TIME TO FINISH THE JOB.
We call upon the NRL to recognise their contribution to Australian rugby league by elevating Peter Sterling and Brett Kenny to Immortal status in 2027 — the 80th anniversary of the Parramatta Eels.
