Recognise domestic abuse–related suicide in law
The Issue
Domestic abuse can have fatal consequences.
In 2025, at least 150 suspected suicides were linked to domestic abuse. There is growing concern about cases where victims die by suicide following sustained abuse, including coercive and controlling behaviour.
Current law does not clearly and consistently recognise where prolonged domestic abuse is a significant contributing factor in suicide. As a result, perpetrators are not always held accountable, and families are left without justice.
These deaths are not isolated incidents. They are preventable outcomes of abuse.
Kiena Dawes was a young mother from Lancashire who tragically took her own life almost four years ago in July 2022 after suffering prolonged domestic abuse.
We call on the UK Government to introduce #KienasLaw to:
- Create a specific criminal offence of domestic abuse–related suicide.
- Include coercive and controlling behaviour within the “dangerous offender” framework, allowing courts to impose extended sentences.
These cases are complex, but the law must reflect the cumulative impact of abuse over time. Complexity should not prevent justice.
New legislation is needed to ensure the role of perpetrators is properly recognised where domestic abuse leads to suicide.
Victims deserve proper and full recognition. Families deserve answers. Perpetrators must be held accountable.
We urge the Government to act. Sign the petition and join the call for change.
This petition is part of ongoing work by AAFDA, Lancashire's Police and Crime Commissioner and partners to raise awareness of this issue and recognise domestic abuse–related suicide in law.
