Petition for Caribbean Nations to Expand Citizenship Rights to Diaspora Descendants
I am a British Caribbean individual, with roots deeply embedded in the vibrant culture and history of the Caribbean. My family’s lineage traces back to this beautiful region, and I strongly believe in the importance of maintaining and strengthening our ties with our ancestral homelands.
The Caribbean diaspora is vast and diverse, with millions of people of Caribbean descent living across the globe. However, many of us are unable to claim citizenship or access fundamental rights, such as obtaining a passport or opening a bank account, in our ancestral countries due to current nationality laws. This disconnects us from our heritage and limits the contributions we could make towards the development and prosperity of these nations.
According to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, there are over 10 million people of Caribbean descent living abroad. If even a fraction of this population were able to claim citizenship, return, or invest in their homelands, it could significantly boost local economies, foster cultural exchange, and strengthen national identities.
Therefore, we call upon the governments of Caribbean nations to amend their nationality laws to allow descendants—including grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Caribbean nationals—to claim citizenship through their grandparents or great-grandparents. Such changes will not only deepen the bonds between diaspora communities and their homelands but will also stimulate economic growth and foster cultural unity across borders.
We urge everyone who values connection to their roots and recognition of their identity to sign this petition today. Let us bridge this gap and work together for a stronger, more connected future for both our diasporic communities and our beloved Caribbean nations.
